Forgive Me, Blogger, For I Have Sinned.

After realizing that I have a set space to complain about the world (and that it need not be neglected), I'll start updating my blog. Gimme a minute and I'll be back. :)

A Little Message About Health Care Reform

Right now, the new health care bill has just been signed and is only a few minutes old. In fact, I just got a text from President Obama announcing that "after a century of effort, health insurance reform becomes law". While I'm very interested to see how this law will be challenged in the upcoming weeks and months, overall, I'm happy someone did something.

So many people are up in arms over this issue, it's hard to find where your personal opinion lies. Well, here's mine: I'm for the bill. I'm for it because the law provides a stipulation preventing insurance companies from defining pre-existing conditions. I'm for it because I feel that insurance is a right, not a privelege. I'm for it because I fear those who couldn't afford it before this morning, even in the slightest, may never see a day where they can at least afford the medicine. And I'm for it most importantly, because it's getting everyone, conservative, liberal, independent, off their butts and getting involved in something that hits home. It's about damn time.

After watching my father beat cancer and see billed envelopes stamped from the hospital roll in, I've seen the good and bad of insurance. After hearing my mother couldn't be covered or would have to be covered at a hefty price for being BORN with a pre-existing condition, I've watched her frustration grow with every denial letter. Thing is, what they went through is happening to the majority of other Americans, and it doesn't matter what side of the political coin they're on. And worse yet, there's that other number of citizens who can't afford anything at all. I'm sure those men, women, and families are just as hard working as any other, aren't evil, and they pay taxes just like the people complaining about paying more under this law. So, what do we do? Do we let them sit by and suffer? Do we say, "Oh, well, I don't think I should have to pay more money so Joe Blow and Betty Whatshername can afford to go to the doctor". Business as usual in health care needed a jolt.
We had to do SOMETHING.

I'm still digging into overviews of the law, but I'm starting to understand it. I understand why it's getting some flack--and why several states, incuding mine are going to fight it. I'm okay with that. I WANT someone to challenge it, because I feel that as Americans, we're supposed to make sure our voice is heard. I want Republicans and Democrats or whoever else to say "I don't feel this represents us all". Isn't that what America is supposed to do: represent us all?

I'm not going to say that this law doesn't deserve criticism and opposition. But I'm glad it went through because at least now, we have a start at making something happen. I hope that those who plan to fight have some good ideas, that those who are backing it can listen and amend, and that we can at some point all feel like we're respresented equally. I don't know when it will happen exactly, but I hope this is the beginning of interaction for America.

My opinion doesn't make me a socialist. It doesn't make me a sadist or any other label someone wants to throw at me. My opinion is that of an American who recognizes that this issue affects everyone. As such, we will spend much of our lives expressing how we feel about this very issue. As Americans, we should stop mudslinging, name-calling, bickering, and acting like our moms didn't raise us right. We need to listen. We need to respect. And we need to ensure that in some way, we act as a country and address how our money pays for a hospital bed or a shot of penicillin. I'm holding my family accountable. I'm holding my friends accountable. I'm holding the liberal and conservative officials I elected accountable. And I will always hold my President accountable. You sounded the gun, President Obama. Hope you're prepared to fight, and fight for everyone--not just the people who voted you into office.

Playlist, June 2009

For some reason, I really wanted to type my playlist faves for the month.

"Say Hey (I Love You", Michael Franti and Spearhead: It's got a raggae vibe, and perfectly flirtatious groove.

"If It Kills Me", Jason Mraz: Probably one of my favorite songs of his.

"Beautiful", G. Love and Tristan Pettyman: If you're a fan of G. Love and Special Sauce, this is a break off ditty that's good enough to listen on a summer night.

"If There's Love", Citizen Cope: Yummy!

"Going On", Gnarls Barkley: Yes, yes, yes. I love this song, and it definitely motivates you in love, life, whatever.

"Where Is My Mind", The Pixies: This is a classic nudge to a particular era, and while most people will remember it as the song playing in "Fight Club"'s credits, it's been a staple of mine for a long time.

"Oh Yeah", Chickenfoot: Any time I can hear Sammy Hagar's voice on a new song, I'm happy.

"Panic Switch", Silversun Pickups: Tempo, melody, guitars...I love this song. Great for training.

"Scream", Michael Jackson (featuring Janet Jackson): Of course we all heard the news by now. Of all my favorite songs that M.J. blessed us with, this is the one that pumps me up. Watching Michael with his sister (who I credit for the reason I started dancing) just gives me chills. And that dance break? Holy Christmas, that was so awesome! I loved this song, loved Michael, and even as I type this am having a hard time composing myself. He was one of the best, hands down. He will be dearly, deeply missed, but his music is that much more loved now that he's gone. Dance in peace, my friend.

Pick-Me-Up?

Ugh.

I should feel a little better than I do today. My hair's a mixture of bedhead plus flip. My nails are still painted to match the frock I donned for Oscar Night, I smell like Johnson's Baby Oil and Jessica Simpson's "Fancy", and I got a ton of sleep last night. I'm quite girly at the moment. But for some odd reason, I feel...uninspired.

Maybe it's the fact that my normal haven, the gym, has been neglected due to long work hours. Maybe it's the fact that I have a triathlon to prepare for and yet, feel soooo not ready for it. Who knows.

My efforts to cheer up include listening to Bob Sinclair's "Sexy Dancer" (great French dance music), and Akon's "Beautiful", cause...well...I need it.

If anyone has some sugar they wanna share--literally or metaphorically--you know how to find me. Here's to cheering up. :)

Luv 2.Oh-No.

Well son, you got me undone
Pulled the wool over my eyes
and got me lovin' you blindly
Who says fairy tales can't be real
When the hotness that you feel
fills you up completely

Who thought we'd be at it again
Looking back at the end
and trying to rewrite it
A first taste may never be enough
Until you feast on old love
and cannot fight it

But now I'm here all alone
Feeling out of control
Without you here beside me
I'm picking up my own heart
Tryin' to make a new start
Cause you want to deny me

I thought you were my knight in armor
So why aren't you saving me?
I don't need a superhero
I just want you to fight the defeat

This ain't a fair game that we play
When we take the love away
And sub in apathy
Who thought we'd rid ourselves of rules
Make both of us a fool
and pretend we're happy

Now a love I couldn't erase
Has been buried and replaced
by a thing less pleasing
An empty shell
of what we used to be
With no beauty left to see
Cause it's all lost meaning

I'm here all alone
Feeling my heart turn to stone
and watching us dying
I thought you were my knight in armor
So why aren't you saving me?
I don't need a superhero
I just want you to fight the defeat

When I've moved through the pain
I can love again
I won't hold the door open for you

A-Mix 35/August 2008

"Don't Think I Don't Think About It", Darius Rucker--Dude, Hootie left the Blowfish and went country. Not bad.

"Got Me Going", Day 26--After watching Diddy put these boys together, I figured at least one hit would come about. I was right. I love dancing to this.

"Keep Me Warm", Ida Maria--Come on now. If any of you Grey's Anatomy fans saw the finale (spoiler alert!), you know you melted when Derek smothered Meredith with a lovely kiss. The backroung noise was this song, and I totally imagine having a Mer/Der moment like theirs when I hear it.

"Be Gentle With Me", The Boy Least Likely To--Again, another G.R. song, this time from season 2. It's basically, theme song of my love life.

"Mercy", Duffy--I know a lot of people have been categorizing her with Amy Winehouse, but I think she's got a voice all her own.

"The Light", Common--I heard this on the radio about a week or so ago, and as I am a Common fan, this made sense to download and playlist.

"Wait Another Day", Uh Huh Her--A little soulful and POP-py.

"The Love We Got", Karina--I just melt like buttah when I hear this song.

"Mr. Carter", Lil' Wayne (featuring Jay-Z)--Two Carters, one track. It was bound to happen.

"All These Things That I Have Done", The Killers--I don't know what happened to this cd, but I fell in love with this song shortly after my baptism. ...Maybe I felt connected to Brandon Flowers, who's Mormon.

"Kashmir", Led Zepplin--This song has got me through many a morning run. Classic.

"Cause I Love You", Lenny Williams--Um, if you've ever watched The Original Kings of Comedy, you'll remember what Steve Harvey said about this song. Otherwise, play it as a homage to a man who knew what love is...and sang about for it nearly 10 minutes.

"Far Away", Nickelback--You can't escape these men no matter how hard you try, but this song definitely has a place in my heart.

"Get It Big", Trap Starz Click--Lol...Just the lyrics are enough to make you either feel like a hot chica...or royally offended. Still, I'll play this in my car any day.
